Trade Secrets on Arranging Furniture in your Conservatory

A well-designed conservatory is something any homeowner would want not only because it makes a home look good inside and from the outdoors, but also because it makes it functional. However, one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is to pack all their beautiful pieces of furniture into their conservatory. The sofa set you found at the thrift shop, five paintings you received on your birthday, the Persian carpet you received for housewarming, and the hand-woven rug your mother handed to you may be beautiful pieces of furniture but putting them together and anywhere in your conservatory can make them unsightly.

Thankfully, we found tips on arranging furniture from Angelo Surmelis, a celebrity designer based in Los Angles. We filtered his know-how to give you the best tips on how you can arrange your furniture in your conservatory when you're using it as a secondary living room:

Rugs under legs

Furniture legs, that is. If you want to make your conservatory cosy with a rug or a carpet, use a carpet big enough to cover the seating area but will still expose some of your flooring. This will make a small conservatory look bigger and a large conservatory look sectioned.

Couches with space

Adding height to your conservatory with a vaulted or peaked ceiling will make it look bigger instantly. If you can't change the ceiling, then make your conservatory look wide by adding space around your seats. Keeping your couches or sofas a few inches away from the panes and other seats will add breathing space and make your conservatory look uncongested. Grouping seats together especially when they fit perfectly can create an illusion of space.

Furniture and height

High curtains add space and elegance when they fall from the ceiling to the floor. However, hanging painting or mirrors too high won't be as beautiful to look at. The rule of thumb in hanging decor is to have them at least 24 inches above pieces of furniture. If you want to experiment, you can leave the wall between your conservatory and your main house empty especially when the space beside the wall is a walkway.

Attention on telly

If you want to enjoy your favourite TV shows in your conservatory, go ahead and move your telly but make sure it doesn't take the attention away from other and more beautiful furnishings in your conservatory. Also, make sure the space between the telly and your seats doesn't receive a lot of traffic.

A good-looking conservatory will awe any homeowner and guest with a good view of and from the outside. However, remember that a conservatory takes a lot of heat so be selective of the furniture you move there because they can fade.
